While it's a little overexposed, I like this one because it was a random donkey in a cow pasture. I was taking pictures of cows on the side of the road in Alabama and up walked a donkey. The overexposed part though looks like a little haze in the background and kind of blankets the donkey as well. Goes well with his mood, I didn't think he liked me taking his picture from the look in his eyes.

Our assignment this week is to take an amazing picture. I have been walking around looking for something amazing and I think I found it. This is not the best picture.....I am printing the best for our class on Saturday. Ross is so excited because he found four pictures that he thinks are amazing. He has better eyes than I do and he can tell when he needs to change the F stop and shutter speed.

This is my long lens focal length 300.00 F 7.1 and 1/320 for shutter. I have a new program that tells me that and I don't have to put my stick back into the camera and try to find the picture to get the numbers.

I took about 8 photos this week that I really liked and it was tough to pick just one, but I think this one is the best and so it is my "Amazing Photo" for the week. It is a water shot taken at Turkey Creek on Tuesday 16 March 2010. ISO is 80, manual settings, no flash, F8, and 1/30th a second. I used a slow shutter speed to get the water ripples to show up among what I think is a beautiful array of interesting objects ranging from plants above the water to a variety of plant life and bits and pieces deep into the water. So, there is substantial depth of field and lots of texture. The background looks a bit out of focus due to the water above the background. I like the texture, variety, water and plant flow, ripples, and the peacefulness of the scene.

This picture was taken at sunrise today (Monday) in FWB at a park on the island. I had a 7:00 am doctor's appt. so it was not so difficult to get up a little earlier for sunrise. I tried the picture using flash but that took away from the beautiful morning sky. Seagulls were in the water everywhere and I even got one flying in the picture. I had several gorgeous pictures but this one of the pier and palm trees appealed to me the most.

I watched a couple of youtube videos on how to take a photo of a water drop and thought I'd give it another 50 tries, out of which I got two really good photos. Here is the best of them.

F-8, 1/250th a second, bounce flash, ISO-80, hand-held.

My improved technique was to use my kitchen sink, fill it with water, let the faucet drip about one drop per second. As soon as I heard the drop hit, I took the photo. In some cases I anticipated the sound. The camera was set on manual and auto focus is a problem. I would focus on a nearby white napkin at the same distance as the drop, hold the button half way down which locks the focus and then point at the spot where the drop would hit. This photo was cropped in the camera but enhanced in PaintShop Pro to get a little better contrast. This was fun!

I've been practicing with the various tasks that Mari has assigned us over the past month and trying to put it all together! I've been taking my camera everywhere this week and just trying different things out. LOTS of failures, which I will not be posting!!

This parrot was at the Niceville Children's park. I took this a few weeks ago when our assignment was to capture an object that was shaded and use "fill in flash". Every picture I took with flash was overexposed, except this one. I put the wax paper over the flash, but still, I think I may need to invest in an external flash one of these days. F/11, 1/40sec., ISO 200, flash

Today I strolled around Baytowne and took various pictures using flash, no flash, trying to capture motion, near/far, etc..

Here's my example of near/far...as I understood the assignment to be since I missed this class.

This photo has stop action, daylight, no flash, and depth of field in it.
I took a large black plastic pan about 2 feet by 4 feet and about 8 inches deep and filled it with water outdoors in the sunlight. Then I took an eyedropper filled with water and put drops into the water in the large pan and photographed them as they hit.
My camera was on a tripod and pointed at the water in the pan. I had the camera shutter speed at 1/250th of a second and f4. It is difficult to get the water drop to fall in the correct place so I had to once again crop outside the camera a bit. I know that's a bummer but it focused attention better on the drop.
Anyway the drop splashes into the water, creates a crater, and pushes water into the air. The background for the water drop is all blurred, rippled, and reflecting the colors of the trees and sky above the pan. It took about 6 tries to get this photo.
It is my attempt to re-create a classic photograph from long ago when stop action was just entering photography and so you find something like this in many photo books. This works better with flash but I'd already used the flash on the other homework photo.

The homework task as I understand it is to take two totally different photos using what we've learned this semester.

One with flash, one without flash. One an action shot.

Both should use what we've learned this semester (exposure control, natural and man-made together, action with or without flash, metering for background and using fill in flash to balance the exposure between the near features and their bright background, fill in flash to reduce shadows, and depth of field control).

So, here is my first photo that uses exposure control, natural and man-made objects, fill in bounce flash to reduce shadows, and some depth of field (the table top is out of focus to the rear of the photo). Next will be an action shot of some sort with obvious depth of field control or at least that is my plan. :>)

Here is another composite of four photos from this morning's visit to Seaside. Upper left is the cross in the church using fill-in flash (note the embedded seashells). Upper right is the bell tower from the front of the church. Lower left is the bell close up using my superzoom at 570mm. Lower right is the cross inside the church from another point of view without flash to show the backlighting from the sky. Again I tried to place the main object at the thirds and to use lines to draw interest.
Twas a nice visit to Seaside. Afterward, the "fish and chips" were delicious at the restaurant on the square. :>) Thanks again to Mari for an interestng class.

I was trying to think of what might "swing" so I could pan it and then photograph it with flash to stop the action. What came to mind was a "swing". Ergo, here is a "swing" in the park by the lake in DeFuniak Springs where I happened to be today. I simply pushed the "swing" and then stood off to the side to take the photo. I was panning, then photographing. This successful attempt was shot at 1/40th a second, F8, and ISO 100 around 4:30pm Sunday, 28 Feb.

I arranged the plants several feet apart. On the second picture I focused on the back plant which caused the front to blur. The top photo was shot with f22 at 1/200 shutter speed using flash.

Dale's homework for close or far objects in focus

Here is my photo composite of two statues about 5 feet apart (in front and behind one another). The top photo shows the near statue in focus (the female) and the bottom photo shows the far statue in focus (the male). Both statues are about 12 inches high and were outdoors under bright sun (about 2pm). The sun was to the left and to the rear of the statues casting pretty good dark shadows on the front of the statues. Flash was used to fill the shadows.

Don't forget we'll be at the coffee shop on the second floor of the Emerald Grande by the Lucky Snapper tomorrow!! Your assignment (you have just over 12 hours to complete) was:

1. Take a photo of a person or item where the person/item is standing in bright sunlight at noon. Use a flash fillin to put light on the shadowed areas.

2. Take a photo of a person or item where the person/item is under a roof with a bright background such as at the Turkey Creek pavillion. Take the light reading on the background and use flash to illuminate the person/item under the roof and in shadow. Both the background and the person/item should have proper illumination in the photo.

Sometimes your subject is under a roof in shadows while the background is very bright. Coincidentally, that happened today as I was photographing on my back porch. The subject ended up looking like she'd just finished a 50 mile mud race in an open canopy jeep (see top part of composite photo).

But again, you can simply take a light reading of the background making sure your background will show up nicely. Then using fill-in flash, you can bring out the true beauty of your subject while retaining the lovely background (see bottom part of composite photo).

Sometimes when photographing a loved one at noon on a sunny day, he/she has distasteful shadows cast from his/her eyelids, forehead, nose, etc (see the left side of the composite photo).

But if you know how to use fill-in flash as taught by Mari Darr-Welch (Destin Wedding Photographer), then you can use fill-in flash to bring out the full beauty of your loved one (see right side of photo). I hope you think the subject in my photo is as lovely as I find her to be.

This is my first posting, and I realize that my cameras (point and shoot) are not as capable as the DSLRs, but intend to try to understand and work within their limitations. These are five photos from the motion study. I used two cameras, a Canon and a Panasonic. Features ranged from a spotmeter to centerweighted, ISO from automatic to 100 fixed, white balance normal, shutter 1/640 to 100, and f stop from 4.5 to 8.0.

Iam not saying I was bored but there wasn't another "fan" for the team but me and it was fun wandering around shooting other sights like the Osprey bringing dinner to their nests. Never saw any "younguns" but there were 7 nests in the lights and lots of them flying around. Then there was the sky that changed as the wind blew by the minute, palm trees blowing in the wind and just interesting folks hanging around.

Help! I'm failing motion miserably!

I seem to have trouble when the lighting is not ideal and how to compensate. When it's dark, I'm in trouble and can't avoid using the flash. Here's what happened to me this week....because I'm posting the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I tried to capture my brother teaching a tennis lesson. It was 5pm, so perhaps a bit dark. My camera wouldn't meter b/c it needed the flash, but I tried to use my knowledge to override it, but I'm not that good yet. These were taken at f/7.1 at 1/25 sec or f/5.6 at 1/30 sec. I know the shutter speed is too slow for these shots, but I was trying to let in more light. Anytime I would change the shutter speed so that it would work faster, my pictures turned out pitch black dark. My ISO was on 640 and then I tried 800, still to no avail. Here's the disappointing proof:

I'm REALLY trusting my brother here sitting behind him while trying to capture action coming towards me. All the shots of only the ball were too blurry.

So help Mari, how could I have fixed this??!!! Should I have used the flash?

Determined to bring some kind of successful homework to class, I had no other action ideas but to take pics. of my 3 year old. (sorry). Same thing as the tennis shots...dark indoor lighting so it needed the flash, which kind of washed everything out b/c my mom has a white couch. My daughter playing ball....

f/10 1/200 sec. ISO 1000, I had to use a flash, otherwise they were pitch black. ISO was left on 1000 b/c I forgot to change it after I was trying to take these w/o a flash.

Then I wanted to try some more natural light so I wouldn't have to use the flash, so we moved to the porch. Obviously worked out much better....despite all the business going on in the background.

I took these pics yesterday (8 Feb) at a spot on Beal Pkwy near Leitz music but on the other side of the street where there is a bridge over what I think is the end of Cinco Bayou. In any case there is a vacant lot to park in and a very short walk to the bridge. This is where hundreds of Pelicans hang out this time of year. They fly under the bridge, over Beal Pkwy, and land in the nearby water right in front of you if you are standing on the sidewalk over the bridge alongside Beal Pkwy. So, I took about 80 photos in 20 minutes of Pelicans coming and going and some other bird with a fish in its claws. This was fun. Lots of action. Here are four of the photos. Upper left is about to land; upper right is dinner in hand; lower left and lower right are pelicans running to take off toward and away from me. I cropped one or two of these outside the camera for better composition.

Every Sunday at about 9:30am there is a group of Radio Control boaters that meet at the lake on College Blvd in Niceville near NWF State College. This morning I joined them around 10am and took these photos all at ISO 200 and 570mm lens (all out on my Canon SX20 superzoom lens). Upper left is action coming toward me (1/400 & F6.3). Upper right is action going away (1/200 & F5.7). Lower left is panning rapidly to get sharp image (1/1000 & F 6.3). Lower right is panning rapidly to blur background to show motion (1/160 & F8). All boats were travelling at about 50 mph so I had a blast trying to capture these images. This was some fast action! The boats are about 4 feet long and they have a full size fishing boat to go retrieve the RC boats should their engines stop. They place buoys out in the lake and race around them. This was fun!

Wow! Thank you Mari for teaching us how to stop motion! Even though these practice shots aren't that great, I'm excited to finally know how to do this so I can still get clear shots in situations as these. I had a zillion bird shots, these were the only ones that stood out to me, only b/c they were clear and the exposure looks right.....finally! I never saw beauty in seagulls, but here it just looks like they are floating freely in the sky watching over the earth below. (when really they're just waiting to crap on someone and take their food). These still pics. of them kind of takes that all away!

Out of a couple hundred shots, these are the four I liked best. I especially liked the photo of one bird following the other.

I'm also experimenting with posting the image at 72 dots per inch and a smaller image size. We'll see how that goes.... :>)

This is a 4 photo composite of the Stations of the Cross from our class on 30 January 2010. I used manual controls and did a lot of "ground work" to get these photos.

All Photos were taken in Manual mode with flash turned off.
Flowers were taken at a shutter speed of 1/50, f5.6,Iso 800.
Seashell was taken at shutter speeds ranging from 1/10 to 1/60 with f4.5 and f5.6 , ISO 800 and varying from 18 to 55mm.
Cross was taken with shutter speeds of 1/80, 1/400 & 1/500 and f4.5 and f5.6, ISO 800, and varying from 24 mm to 55mm.

Wow, today's class was a blast! I think we gained some serious ground today. Keep in mind that things will get more confusing before they are clear. If you are befuddled right now, it just means that you are beginning to understand.

Now let's delve into the blog issues. I want to see your images on here!!!!

This is a screenshot of what it will look like after you hit the little photo icon that I have drawn an arrow around. Before you hit the photo icon, fill in the title area and write something about how you achieved your image on the larger blank area.

Once you hit the image button another box like the one shown below it will pop up. Hit the choose file button and select the image you want to upload. Please remember to keep your files at a fairly small resolution. Make sure you check the terms of service button and then hit upload image. Voila!!!! Your image will appear on the larger text area.

When you are done filling in text and uploading images hit publish post and your images will then

be online!

Here is an easy way to remember F-Stops and Shutter Speeds:

The relationship between aperture and the amount of light that gets into the camera is a little backwards:

SMALL F-STOP NUMBER = LOTS OF LIGHT
LARGE F-STOP NUMBER = MINIMAL LIGHT

Here is an example of how this works with actual f-stop numbers:

f4.5 (wide open) = LARGE AMOUNT OF LIGHT
f8.0 (somewhat open) = MEDIUM AMOUNT OF LIGHT
f22 (almost closed) = SMALL AMOUNT OF LIGHT

The important point here is that if you have your aperture set to a small number (ignoring shutter speed for now) a lot of light is going to get into the camera. When you are shooting in low-light conditions (at dusk, for example) you will have no choice but to set the aperture wide open to capture as much light as possible.

When you are shooting in bright conditions, you have more flexiblity to change the aperture (since you can let in less light and still get a good photograph). You can set the aperture to a high number and let in less light as a result.

Welcome to my class!! I am so glad you are learning how to blog as well as become better photographers! That is awesome...a two for one!

First of all, remember we will be at St. Simons at 9am on Saturday. All of our class changes and fun links will be posted on this site.

Secondly, you should have all gotten an e-mail about this blog with logins and passwords. You are now able to post class work on here and even share the link (no passwords or logins please) with friends!

The first link I want to share is the you tube site with the tulips photographer. Her name is Carol Andrews and she's an amazing photographer who has had more than a lion's share of strife and heartache the last couple of years. But yet she perseveres with the most amazing and wonderfully refreshing attitude! She is a wonderful inspiration! Click on this link to view her tulips video!

Another photographer, Jerry Ghionis is wonderful because he photographs the real people. He has studied art and with his quirky sense of humor has emulated some great paintings with photographs.
